Riverfront Free RV Camping at Rufus Landing Recreation Area in Rufus, OR

Not only is this very large dispersed camping area right on the Columbia River near the John Day Dam, you also will have a beautiful mountain view off in the distance, and the low rumble of trains passing through off and on, which I personally love. 🙂 Video

Rufus landing Recreation Area is a popular boondocking spot for large RVs and when you watch the video below you’ll understand why. Lots of space, two separate areas one with a paved road and riverfront real estate that’s yours to enjoy for up to seven days in any 30 day period. Sweet!

Basic amenities just a few minutes away.

There’s really not much to Rufus, OR just off of I-84 in this location, but there is a Sinclair gas station with propane, The Bulldog Diner with excellent hamburgers, small convenience store with a deli and greasy spoon grill plus a small steakhouse and lounge—Bob’s Texas T-Bone Restaurant & Lounge.

Bob’s steakhouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., is closed on Mondays.

Boat launch and fishing on Lake Umatilla at your doorstep

The official name for this reservoir from the John Day Dam to McNary Dam is Lake Umatilla. It’s a bit of a misnomer if you ask me, as it does not look, feel, or act like any lake I’ve been to. Most folks just say “Columbia River”. That is more of what it is like, not an actual lake.

Naming convention aside, it’s very popular with fishermen both out in the water and tossing a line in from the shore. Fish in this area of the Columbia River include Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Sturgeon, Steelhead, and salmon.

If you watch to the end you’ll see a sweet little shallow pool next to the river that would be great for kids to splash around in, as long as being watched closely by an adult of course. Currents in the Columbia River can be fast, flowing at 5 knots in some areas.

Cell coverage is excellent

This area right off the highway has excellent cellular coverage. I could watch movies, make phone calls, upload videos etc. no problem.
