My spur of the moment trip to Sequoia National Park was a bust. Even though it was a short hour and a half drive off of I-5 and a beautiful sunny day I didn’t get to see the magnificent giant Sequoia trees that make the park so popular—it was snowing at higher elevations and snow chains were required. Live and learn. I’ll definitely go back in late spring or summer for a visit: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. Video
I like impromptu adventures. For me planning trips and obsessing over every detail to make sure everything will go smoothly is boring and the trip often disappointing.
I still drove into the park a short ways to see what it was like, and checked out Tunnel Rock plus drove through the first campround; loved the wooded, rustic setting.

Around 10 miles before you reach the entrance to the park and the tourist town Three Rivers are a bunch of cool natural attractions such as: Lake Kaweah, Slick Rock, and Horse Creek Recreation Area. It’s here that I found a bunch of Free RV Camping along the side of Highway 198.
Check out this video of one of these spots located just before Horse Creek Campgound with awesome views of Kaweah River. Wouldn’t that be a great places to chill for a night or two? 🙂 The rent-a-van in the featured photo above (gals from France touring the U.S.) is in another of these pullouts off the highway a little ways away.
Yes, there is cell service
My 5G iPhone with Verizon WiFi hotspot worked great! I was able to work online no problem, make phone calls etc.
