Free RV Camping Near Joshua Tree National Park West Entrance

This Joshua Tree Free RV Camping off of Sunfair Road area is excellent not only because of how flat the road is (large rigs will not have any issues) and the beautiful desert landscape but also because it is only 15 minutes or so from the small town Joshua Tree and West entrance of Joshua Tree National Park and visitor center. Score! There is a coffee shop, restaurants, liquor store, pizza, pharmacy, laundry, gas stations, etc. Take note the Joshua Tree Saloon has excellent cod fish & chips! Video

There are many free BLM camping areas off of Sunfair Road

The one tricky part of this BLM location is there is no street sign on the right side of the road so you need know where you’re going. That’s where I come in 🙂 To get to this spot you look for the sign to Joshua Tree No-Kill Animal Shelter on your right on the way to Joshua Tree Lake Campground. Drive around 0.3 miles more then turn right onto Sunflower Road and the BLM area.

This is the lake! It’s really a big pond but great for kids to fish or feed the ducks.

See the two signs in the featured photo above? That is where you want to turn right. To the left off of Sunfair there is a street sign for Sunflower Road but it’s not easy to see. As with all BLM camping there is a maximum 14 day stay.

There are other BLM Free RV Camping areas nearby but this one off of Sunflower Road has the nicest spots to camp IMHO. There is some washboarding so is a little bumpy but any RV can manage it.

A paved road leads to the BLM area in the video below as well—turn right on Broadway, just before the No-Kill Shelter. One side of the street is a residential area, so didn’t want to highlight it. The camping area off of Sunflower Road is better i.e. more desert vegetation, less dry, caked mud flat.

There is also a little ‘micro-farm’ of sorts at the end of Broadway to the right with sheep, barking dogs, etc. If you don’t drive out far enough into the BLM area the wind may blow some unpleasant smells your way. Take Sunflower Road!

Here’s a video of the BLM area. This was taken in February, it gets much more crowded during high season March to May when the weather is warmer.

There is excellent cell service

Another bonus to this spot is the cellular coverage is excellent. I worked, watched movies, made phone calls etc. with my 5G iPhone and Verizon service. If you camp inside Joshua Tree National Park—which is very nice, I’ve done it in years past—you will not have any cell service. Cheers.
