I was going to title this post and video “Van Dwellers Revolt Against Lack of Overnight Parking on the Oregon Coast”. LOL and silliness! The thing most van dwellers are revolting against is the high cost of living in the U.S. and possibly seeking a life of adventure on the great open road. Super cool.

But it’s true that folks who use this spot to sleep overnight in a car, camper van, or RV have kept it open for all of us to use. Apps will tell you that overnight parking is not allowed, etc. and it’s not true. At least not for now. You can, just be respectful, don’t leave trash, stay only for the night, etc.
Hot tip: You can park overnight in the Moolack Beach parking area, then just drive up (after 5 a.m.) the road north a mile or so on Highway 101 to the large day use area a top a cliff overlooking the ocean. Like I did and then took the photo above. đŸ™‚
Technically it’s not legal to park overnight at Moolack Beach
There is a sign posted that isn’t easy to see or read which does cite an ordinance against overnight parking or camping. But it’s not enforced, at least for now.
Newport, OR with awesome Nye Beach is just 10 minutes away (4.5 miles) and there is Agate Beach State Recreation Site south before you get to Newport with a large parking area, day use and easy beach access.
There are many spots to park overnight at Nye Beach.
Steep dirt paths are the only beach access at Moolack Beach
My personal theory of one reason why overnight parking is allowed at this awesome location is because it’s not accessible to most folks. There are two paths down to the beach—one on each end of the parking lot—and both are very steep dirt paths. Get ready to slide on your rear end if you want to take a beach walk. đŸ™‚
I was there in high season (July) on a Sunday, and most tourists stopped in for a few minutes to enjoy the view then left. All along the coast are beach access points with parking lots that are easy walking paths not steep inclines.

If you do stop overnight here please be respectful, don’t overstay your welcome, do not leave trash anywhere, etc.
It’s to the credit of all van dwellers and RV travelers who have stayed here over the years that it is still open for others to enjoy. Cheers.
There’s excellent cellular coverage
And of course another reason why it’s a popular spot. I had excellent cell service with my 5G iPhone and Verizon hotspot.
